About Us

Why  "Haphazard Homestead"?

hapzard: adj.  1. characterized by lack of order or planning, by irregularity, or by randomness;  determined by or dependent on chance; aimless.

Yeah...that would be us.

About The Homestead

We're suburban gardeners beginning to shift our focus from debt-reduction and frugality to an urban/suburban homesteading lifestyle.  Staying out of debt and living frugally will always be important to us, but we're trying to expand our horizons to include more DIY projects, alternative energy sources, healthier foods and recipes, and both simple and green living ideas.  And maybe some chickens.

We aren't entirely self-sufficient and I'm not sure that's even our end goal, but working in that direction is important to us.  We try to repair rather than replace, reuse materials when we can, and do crafty-useful things like making our own soap.

Sometimes we slip up and do something completely spendy, like buying a travel trailer to enhance our leisure time and drain our bank account.  Yep, it's important to us to keep things balanced like that.

About Annie

I've been around the blogging block a few times , but I've never quite "put myself out there" for fear of offending a reader with something I might write -- or not write.  It's not like I ever lied about anything on my other blogs, I just tend to be reserved with my thoughts and opinions.

This time I'm hoping to let loose a little.  We'll see if that happens or not.

You don't have to agree with everything (or anything) I share here, but I do ask that you are kind and respectful about it to me and other readers if you do disagree.

About  Shane

Shane is my young husband, 13 years younger than me. (Go me!) He's a construction worker with a soft heart who likes building things, fixing things, drinking beer and eating.  He's a smart man, a good gardener, a patient parent, a decent hunter, and old soul and the love of my life.

I'll mention Shane a lot here, but he probably won't be writing any of the posts.  His excuse is that he doesn't know how to type.

About Kat

Kat is our 8-year-old granddaughter who lives with us.  We have legal guardianship, but her mom (my daughter) is still in the picture at least every other weekend.  Kat's currently in third grade.  She likes music and singing, cats, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Indiana Jones.

She also likes reading, drawing, swimming, and cheese pizza.  She's a pretty typical kid.

About Our Names

We all have unique real life names that can be easily found by search engines.  We prefer to retain our privacy for a variety of reasons, so I choose to use pseudonyms on this blog.  I do not use pseudonyms for the cats. :)

About Recipes

I am not a nutritionist, but I try to cook in a way I think is healthy.   My choices are often not part of the mainstream, so you might not agree with them.  That's ok.  Please feel free to alter the recipes you find here to suit your needs, tastes and ideas about what is healthy.  I think food and recipes are for sharing, but I do ask that if you re-post a recipe you find here, that you give me credit and preferably a link back, and that you don't use my food pictures (or any others) without asking permission first.

About Everything Else

Just ask.
